| On the Other Side |
Apologies for the lack of blogging over the summer. We're now back in China. We arrived on Aug. 21th and just recently got internet up and running in our apartment. We had a wonderful time seeing people this summer. It was certainly a whirlwind with not enough time to see everyone, but we were thankful for the time we had.
It's been nice to be back in our apartment and back in China. It's made us realize how much has changed since this time last year. A year ago we were moving into our new home. China was still very new and overwhelming to us. We were so clueless about so much. We have three new teammates this year, and we can very easily relate to all of the feelings they are going through right now. It is somewhat encouraging to look back and realize how far we've come, how much we've learned. We certainly have so much more to learn, but we're grateful that we now have the basics of day to day life down along with a general understanding of culture. Our language skills are not what we'd like them to be, but we've managed to obtain a level that makes life a little easier. But more importantly than all of that is the growing love and affection that we have for this place and its people. When we first arrived last year, we were so overwhelmed by the cultural differences that feelings of fondness were few and far between. Now, looking back it seems that we've grown in love with this place without even realizing it. So it feels very good to be on the other side of our first year. |

It was so wonderful to see you both and get to hear all about your life in China. Thanks again for all the pictures and the great cloissone (spelling?) Christmas ornament -- they are all beautiful.
I had lunch with your Mom today, and she is so excited about visiting you later this week. She is also overwhelmed by the idea of packing. Mikala had a great 18th birthday.
Anyway......my dog, Jake, is getting a little stronger, so I hope he'll be walking by Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Brenda Sawyer & I are headed to Austria on 9/27. Your Mom can tell you all about our plans & itinerary -- it's really interesting.
Well, gotta go, but just wanted to say hello and tell you how much all 3 of you are in my thoughts and heart!
